SIMULTANEOUS INTERPRETATION THROUGH SOFTWARE IS THE VISION OF FUTURE TECHNOLOGY: DAYANIDHI MARAN

Shri Dayanidhi Maran, Minister of Communications & Information Technology has said that the future will see simultaneous interpretations done through automatic machine but not human translators. While one is able to speak or write in one language of his own the other person should be able to hear it or read it in the langue of his choice. This is the ambition and vision for the future of our country. This was stated by Shri Dayanidhi Maran, Minister of Communications & Information Technology while addressing the Parliamentary Consultative Committee attached to his Ministry, here today. Dr. Shakeel Ahmad, Minister of State for Communications & Information Technology was also present.

Speaking on the agenda of the meeting “Technological Development for Indian Languages”, Shri Maran said that in India hundreds of languages are in usage out of which 22 are recognized as the national languages. Many of the languages have their own distinct scripts and literature. Each of them is a symbol of their own culture and traditions. It is our responsibility to preserve these treasures which we have inherited from our ancestors, despite our advancement in the age of technology, he said. The Department of Information Technology has launched a very ambitious Language Technology Mission under which a major initiative has been taken to aggregate Indian language fonts and software tools from various public/private players, incorporate them into user-friendly tools and products and made them available free of cost for public through CDs and web downloads.

During the meeting, the Technological Development for Indian Languages (TDIL), Centre for Advanced Computing (C-DAC) and National Informatics Centre (NIC) made presentation to the Members showing various softwares developed in Indian Languages and e-governance initiatives. Participating in the discussion, the Members appreciated the initiatives taken by the TDIL, C-DAC and NIC and made suggestions for taking the benefits of the products developed in Indian Languages to the masses.
